How to choose the right wedding make-up artist

A good makeup artist can mean the difference between a nice wedding face and a drop-dead beautiful one. Follow the five steps below for finding your perfect make-up artist and you won’t go wrong!

Step 1 - Begin your search at least three to six months in advance. Makeup artists specialising in weddings are in demand, and because many wedding dates overlap, it's essential to book with a reputable and professional artist as soon as possible.

Step 2 - Ask other recent brides you know or attend local wedding fairs. Alternatively search the internet. When comparing make-up artists online, always check for photos of previous work, pricelists, qualifications/experience, products they use and areas of coverage.

Step 3 - Interview all candidates. Don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions before you book. A good make-up artist will also ask you lots of questions such as your colour themes for the day, details of your dress/hair, venue etc.

Step 4 - Be prepared. It is a really good idea to take pictures of your desired make-up looks along to your trial. It is a lot easier to explain what you want through pictures than words! Also take your make-up bag to your trial so that she can see which products you currently use. If you have a definitely style that you want to follow for your big day, arrive at your trial with your usual make-up on so she can get a good idea of how you usually wear your make-up.

Step 5 - It is recommended to hold your trial at least 2 to 3 months before the wedding day. Remember that it is a trial. Use this opportunity to try out different looks if necessary. And be completely honest with your make-up artist. You know your face better than anyone. Don't get talked into something you won't feel comfortable with on the day or in your pictures!
